Giant B(ob)omb Process Preview (UPDATE!)

This is a small portion of a much bigger project that I’ll be writing up, here and elsewhere. I’m probably still 4-6 weeks out on the final build, but I wanted to share a sneak peek at a really cool element.

Every project is most thrilling when I’m able to gain new skills or learn new tools/software. For this one, I dove into Adobe After Effects! I’m going to hold back on the rest of the build, but part of it was creating an intro video for Giantbomb.com which a is games website I’ve followed for years.

With the internet’s help, I was able to pull together something that I think is pretty special. It’s cool as a standalone, but it’ll be even better when put to final use.

Not ashamed to say I followed a YouTube tutorial pretty specifically to create the backdrop. Doing is the best way for me to learn, and there were a ton of techniques there that I can use in further work. The rest of it is all me. I’ve still got a few tweaks to make especially with the final animation, but I have clever ideas on how to get that just right. I’m also searching for the perfect VHS glitch sound file.

Speaking of audio, I pulled the bg track from FreeMusicArchive and want to make sure they get credit. It’s an awesome resource! I was going for something synthy with a little John Carpenter oppressiveness at the end and the ‘My Way’ track from Syntactic was perfect.

The whole project is going to be sent to their office as a Thank You for literal years of entertainment.

Below is a final preview hinting at the scope of the work left to do. I’m excited to complete it, but the bulk of what’s left is not-a-little daunting.

Update: I did go through and fix the animation along with several other tweaks that will show up in the final product. Unfortunately not everything could make it in. The following were left on the cutting room floor:

Finished the Intro! Lots more work to do on everything else that goes around this thing.
